  • Tweaking

The site has been around for a little while now and it's been going pretty well!  The thing is, I keep finding stuff to tweak here and there on the site.  It's a good thing though because with each iteration, the site gets better and better.

For example, looking at the frontpage, the most important thing is probably the most understated thing on the page.  That thing is the site-wide top games.  That little section on the side with the top 10 games.  I think it's a big deal and it's pretty much the entire point of the site, yet it's just kinda thrown to the side with no emphasis.  So I'll be redoing that and making it the really cool part of the site that it should be.  I think I'll also put in some delta values, so you can see what games are moving up or down as people write comparisons.

  • Made the Switch

Got some new hosting and it is so much faster.  I think the problem was that the website was not being hosted on the same machine as the DB, so there was a lot of time spent waiting for data to come back from queries.  I had some really crappy DNS issues, but I think I have resolved them and now have a site that is much faster.

  • Hosting Switch

Looks like I gotta do it.  For a while, the site has been running slow.  Even after my tweaking, it just won't run very fast.  On average, it seems to take 3+ seconds to load the frontpage, which is just way too long.

I just picked up VPS hosting at netdepot.com and will be giving them a go for a little while.  It will be nice to have my own machine where I can install whatever I like.  It will also be nice to have the website and the db on the same machine and avoid extra delays from data transfers.  I used to have mediatemple gridservice, which was actually pretty good.  It's just that the page load delays were just way too long.

  • Spreading the Word

I have entered the "spread the word" phase of the website.  The people that are active on the site are totally awesome, but of course, I would love to bring some more people into the community.

That being said, I'm thinking about sending an email to all the current users.  I of course feel weird about doing such a thing, but it's not like I'm gonna try to sell them some random product or anything.  There will also be email settings so that users can opt out of receiving emails from the website.

Running ads sounds like a good idea, but in reality, it will be quite expensive for not too much gain.  At this point, it might just have to be word of mouth through message boards, email, IM conversations and all that kind of stuff.

  • Truncating Stuff

It's tricky truncating text that has html tags in it.  If you truncate before any html tag is closed, it can really mess stuff up.  For example, if someone writes their entire entry in bold (strong tag surrounds everything), but I truncate it for display before I render it on the front page, then in Firefox, everything after that will be bolded because of the unclosed strong tag.

So, what you should really do is strip out all html first, then truncate the text.  That way you won't have to deal with unclosed tags and all that stuff.
